On Monday morning, November 16, 2020, just after midnight, what was at the time a Category level 5 hurricane named Iota blasted into Isla de Providencia and terrorized its inhabitants. Torrential rain and life-threatening gusts scoured the small island of 5,000 people and destroyed 98% of its infrastructure. Scant reports from the island, that now has no power and little to no phone service, indicates that those who survived are trying to make do with just 5 buildings, a hospital without a roof, and any emergency aid that can be shipped to the island from nearby Columbia. Neighboring island San Andres was also hit hard by the, by then Category 4 hurricane.
